Best way to volunteer mechanic services to club racing teams?

Edward Sockethands asked:

I am giving up the dream to drive or even build my own race car. However, I still would love to be involved. I’ve worked on very many street cars (some high-performance, most just average). I have an extremely high working knowledge of cars and race cars. I read Race Car Engineering and have many Motorbooks about the subject of racing. I am more thorough than fast; so, I am not talking about the prospect of working as a pit crew member. Prepping a car in the paddock area is more my speed. I wouldn’t mind starting out by just changing oil or keeping the tools organized.

How does one “break the ice” with a team or advertise your desire to volunteer mechanic services to a club team in the U.S.?

You can advertise in racing papers like National Dragster and Speed and Sport News etc.

If you are volunteering you probably need to find a local team that is close to your location. Go around to the local team shops during the week and talk to whomever is there. Carry some kind of card or resume that you can leave with them that has you phone number. It should be easy to find someone who needs help.

    Good luck.
